Balustrade

A protective barrier of vertical members fixed atop a balcony, deck, or stair edge to prevent falls. Minimum 1 m height in residential Australia.

A balustrade prevents people falling from an elevated edge. In Australia the National Construction Code (NCC, Volume 2) sets minimum heights: 1000 mm above any walkable surface that is more than 1 m above the lower level. Stair balustrades follow the rake of the stair at the same minimum height measured vertically from the nosing.

Vertical members (balusters) must be spaced so a 125 mm sphere cannot pass through any opening. Top rails on a balustrade also need to resist a horizontal load (typically 0.75 kN/m for residential, 1.5 kN/m for assembly use).

CAD60's balustrade models include flat-top, stair, and Juliet variants with parametric post spacing, baluster pitch, and rail profile.
