Balustrade Design Software

Short answer

Balustrade design software ranges from glass tools like Smart Glazier and F.H. Brundle's Liveconfigurator, to structural detailing like Tekla Structures, to general CAD, to CAD60, which draws metal and glass balustrades, handrails and Juliet balconies from your sizes.

A balustrade looks simple from the street. A top rail, some posts, some infill. On paper it gets busy fast. Post spacing, fixings, corners, a stair rake, a wall end, glass panel sizes. The software you pick decides how long all of that takes to draw.

This guide compares the tools that draw balustrades, from glass-only designers to full structural detailing. Every claim about another product was checked on that company's own website in October 2026. CAD60 is one option, and its limits are listed too.

What you need to know

  • Glass balustrade tools (Smart Glazier, Brundle Liveconfigurator) are built around glass panels and hardware.
  • Tekla Structures has railing and stair tools, but it is structural software for big projects.
  • General CAD draws any balustrade, but you place every post, bar and dimension yourself.
  • CAD60 draws metal and glass balustrades, handrails and Juliet balconies from your sizes in 60 seconds.
  • Pick by what you make most: glass, bar infill, stairs or one-off ornamental work.
The short version, in 18 seconds. No sound needed.

What does a balustrade drawing need to show?

Whatever draws it, a good balustrade sheet shows:

  • An elevation of each run with the overall length and height.
  • Post positions and centres, and how each post is fixed: base plate, side mount or core drilled.
  • The top rail and bottom rail sections, and the infill with its spacing.
  • Corners, wall ends and any stair rake, with the angle.
  • A cutting list and the finish, like powder coat colour.

The step by step version is in how to draw a balustrade. If you are not sure which one you are drawing, read balustrade vs handrail first.

What kinds of balustrade software are there?

  • Glass balustrade designers. Built for glaziers. Panels, spigots, cutouts, hardware and glass orders.
  • Supplier configurators. Free tools from a parts maker, built around its own posts, clamps and fittings.
  • Structural detailing. Tekla Structures and similar. Stairs, railings and the building they sit in.
  • General CAD. SketchUp, AutoCAD LT, Fusion, FreeCAD. Anything you can draw.
  • Drawing generators. Pick a model, type sizes, get the set. CAD60 works this way.

Most balustrade shops end up in two of these at once. A glazier might quote in a glass tool and still sketch the odd curved stair by hand. A metal shop might draw its bar balustrades in a generator and keep SketchUp for the one-offs.

If you buy a post or glass system from one supplier, ask them if they have a design tool. Some do, and it saves you looking up part numbers. Just remember it will only ever offer their parts.

What do glass balustrade design tools do?

Smart Glazier sells a balustrade designer for glaziers and fabricators who quote glass railings, balustrades, balconies and pool fences. Its page lists drag-and-drop layouts and cutouts, preloaded hardware libraries, costing for the supplier you pick, and glass drawings with cutout details you can email, print or export as DXF. It is cloud-based. The page offers a booked demo and does not show prices.

F.H. Brundle's Liveconfigurator is a free online tool from a UK supplier. You enter your sizes and choose from its glass systems: pre-assembled posts, frameless glass, spigots and stand-offs, plus stairways. It sends back a quote pack with a parts list, drawings and a 3D model. It is built around Brundle's range, so it suits you best if you buy from them.

Both are strong on glass. Neither is aimed at a welded bar balustrade with a powder coated aluminium frame.

Do you need structural software for stair balustrades?

Usually not, unless you detail whole commercial stairs. Tekla Structures has a "Stairs, handrails and ladders" set of tools. Its Railings component builds a railing between two or more stanchions, as a handrail on a stair or a guardrail along a beam or slab, with top, middle and bottom rails.

It is also a big piece of software. Tekla runs on Windows 11 only, is sold by subscription and is built for detailers on building projects. For a shop that does a few stair balustrades a month, it is more tool than the job needs.

Where does CAD60 fit for balustrades?

CAD60 draws a set of balustrade models from your sizes: flat-top bar balustrades, stair balustrades, glass balustrades and glass balustrade runs, stair and level handrails, an ornamental railing, and four styles of Juliet balcony. You type the sizes and pick the options the model offers. It builds a 3D model and draws every view with dimensions and a cutting list. Drawings in 60 seconds.

The limits:

  • Catalogue models only. If your balustrade is not one of them, CAD60 cannot draw it. Paid users can ask for a new model, built free.
  • Not a glass ordering tool. It does not price glass from a supplier or send a glass order.
  • Not general CAD. No free drawing, no editing lines by hand.
  • DXF only on sheet models. Paid users get PDF and STEP, and a DXF cut file on the decorative sheet models.
  • Free plan is preview only. Watermarked previews of your own sizes. Clean downloads are paid. See pricing.

How do you choose balustrade design software?

  1. Mostly glass? A glass designer like Smart Glazier fits a glazing business. If you buy one supplier's system, see if they have a free configurator.
  2. Mostly welded bar or flat-top balustrades? A drawing generator saves the most time, as long as it has your style.
  3. Commercial stairs tied into a building? That is detailing work. Tekla or a detailer.
  4. One-off ornamental? General CAD.

Common questions

Can CAD60 draw a Juliet balcony?

Yes. There are four Juliet balcony models: ornamental, vertical bar, laser-cut and glass. You type the sizes and CAD60 draws the set with a cutting list.

What software is used to design glass balustrades?

Glaziers use glass-specific tools like Smart Glazier, or a supplier's configurator like F.H. Brundle's Liveconfigurator. CAD60 also draws glass balustrade panels and runs, but it does not price or order glass.

Is there free balustrade design software?

Brundle's Liveconfigurator is free but tied to its own UK range. FreeCAD is free and open source. CAD60's free plan shows watermarked previews of your own balustrade sizes.

Can SketchUp draw a balustrade?

Yes. You model the posts, rails and infill yourself and use LayOut, which comes with SketchUp Pro, for dimensioned sheets. It suits one-off designs better than repeat work.

Can CAD60 draw a stair balustrade?

Yes. The stair balustrade and stair handrail are catalogue models. You type the stair sizes and CAD60 draws the raked run with its dimensions and cutting list.

Which balustrade software exports DXF?

Smart Glazier lists DXF output for its glass drawings. FreeCAD lists DXF among its file formats too. CAD60 gives a DXF cut file only on its decorative sheet models; for anything else, import its STEP file into CAD and export from there.
